At Translate. One, we believe that the heart of our company is our people. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our Meet the Team blog series, where we’ll be highlighting a different team member in each post!

In this fun and engaging series, we ask each team member 15 questions—from their favorite hobbies to the best advice they’ve ever received. It’s a lighthearted way to get to know the incredible individuals who help us deliver top-notch translation and localization services every day.

Next one on our list is our Head of Production for the U.S., Emily Brewer!

1. Emily, where are you located?

I live in Columbia, South Carolina.

2. How long have you been with the company?

Almost 4 years.

3. How long have you been working in the localization industry?

14 years.

4. What does your role entail?

1) Leading a team of wonderful, smart, organized, high achievers who make me laugh every day. 2) Managing the expectations of clients who sometimes make me want to cry 😛

5.What do you enjoy most about your role?

Every day is different.

6. Can you tell us about your educational background and how it contributed to where you are today?

I studied Spanish in high school which lead to being a Spanish major in college. I studied abroad for just a summer because I was having so much fun at Auburn University and didn’t want to miss a semester. It turned out that I had even more fun studying abroad in Chile and ended up graduating early to move there. My first introduction to the translation industry was doing freelance translations for engineering students at a university in Valparaiso where I lived, and also a small SLV owned by a British expat. Once I caught the translation bug I returned to the US to get a translation degree, and ended up meeting my partner and finding a job as a Project Manager in Pittsburgh, PA. Working as a PM for 8 years, while continuing to freelance, including proofreading Spanish > English subtitles for Netflix, broadened my perspective of the language services industry. Since then I’ve used the skills and perspectives from each of those roles to contribute to the success of our team and educate clients on the translation process.

7. What’s a fun fact about you that not many people know?

I was president of my high school class every year except for senior year, so I never have to plan the class reunion (typically the class president is in charge of planning reunions) 😀

8. What’s your favorite activity or hobby outside of work?

Running, reading, and going to concerts or music festivals. All of those hobbies were put aside for the first two years of my daughter’s life because I didn’t have the time or energy but now I’m finally back to at least running and reading and it makes me feel like a whole human again!

9. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

Being able to revisit/relive any moments of my life. I love thinking about good memories and would like to be able to experience them again.

10. What’s your favorite book, movie, or TV show?

Too hard to pick a favorite book, but I would recommend that people read 100 Years of Solitude and Station 11. My favorite TV shows are all guilty pleasure shows that I watch while vegging on the couch after a long day: Love is Blind, Selling Sunset, and Sex and the City. That said, the best TV show of all time is Mad Men.

11. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Next on my list is Mallorca, but really I’m happy to go anywhere.

12. What’s your proudest accomplishment (personal or professional)?

Far and away, my daughter Nora. Everything changed the moment she was born and I’ve never been more proud of both myself and her.

13. Do you have any pets? If so, tell us about them.

Two silly huskies! Chewie is 12 and Roman is 3, I think.

14. Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?

“There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.” – The Beatles

15. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Follow your feet.
